In order to promote the share of diverse voices in the development of and societal interaction with algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI), we present a list of German-speaking female and non-binary individuals who are experts on algorithms and the ethics of algorithms.

Technologies like AI are not neutral and can even reinforce existing inequalities. Therefore, it is crucial to negotiate diversity in the tech industry and how to deal with it as a central issue. This is the only way to develop technologies and debate about them that reflect the diverse realities of our lives.

For many years, not a single female and non-binary expert was among the speakers at events addressing digitalization-relevant issues. That’s why Carla Hustedt started this list on the occasion of International Women’s Day in 2019. In the last four years, a lot has happened and our list of experts working on algorithmic systems and AI continues to grow. Therefore, we are happy if the list is used, developed and circulated.

This list is also an invitation to all men in the tech industry and beyond to actively stand in solidarity with female and non-binary individuals, people of all genders, as well as all other diversity dimensions, and create a brave, visible, and united force for equality and development of responsible technologies like AI. Because for a more equitable and diverse society, not only gender is crucial, but also various other diversity characteristics such as ethnic or social background. Let’s work on this together!

Information:

The decision to include an expert on the list is based on whether the expert addresses societal issues relevant to digitalization and focuses on the ethics of algorithms in particular. We do not conduct an assessment of individual content in making our decision. We also strive for a balanced representation of different backgrounds to ensure that all perspectives on the issue can be heard.

If you would like to be included on the list, have your name removed or would like to have the information provided about you changed, please contact Carina Wegener (carina.wegener@bertelsmann-stiftung.de). If you know of other female or non-binary individuals who should be included in the list, please let us know! We will make every effort to respond in a timely manner to your concerns.
