Our<\/span> recent<\/span> EuroStack<\/span> report <\/span>outlines<\/span> how Europe can <\/span>strengthen<\/span> its <\/span>digital sovereignty <\/span>through<\/span> homegrown <\/span>infrastructure, fair <\/span>innovation<\/span> and <\/span>reduced reliance<\/span> on non-European tech giants<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Europe stands at a digital crossroads. More than 80% of the digital technologies that companies and public institutions rely on come from outside the continent. This dependency is particularly evident in the field of AI: 70% of the foundational models used worldwide originate in the United States. At the same time, European companies account for just 7% of global research spending on software and the internet \u2013 an alarming indicator of Europe\u2019s lag in key digital technologies. This dependency not only weakens Europe’s innovative strength but also threatens its digital sovereignty.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The report EuroStack – A European Alternative for Digital Sovereignty<\/strong><\/a>, commissioned by the Bertelsmann Stiftung and supported by a distinguished partner consortium \u2013 including the Mercator Foundation, the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (UCL IIPP) and the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS)<\/strong> \u2013 outlines how the EuroStack initiative can help Europe reduce its dependency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Providing a detailed analysis, the report <\/span>demonstrates<\/span> how Europe can <\/span>build<\/span> technological resilien<\/span>ce<\/span> and <\/span>strengthen<\/span> economic competitive<\/span>ness<\/span> by developing<\/span> its own digital infrastructure. The report was <\/span>authored<\/span> by a team of <\/span>experts<\/span>, i<\/span>nclud<\/span>ing<\/span> <\/span>Prof. Paul Timmers<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Dr. Fausto Gerone<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>alongside<\/span> Italian digital and data expert <\/span><\/span>Prof. <\/span>Francesca Bria<\/span><\/span>, a leading <\/span>advocate<\/span> for a European, value<\/span>s<\/span>–<\/span>driven<\/span> digital ecosystem.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative relies on open-source innovation and agile development to make implementation efficient.
